Rossby waves in rapidly rotating Bose–Einstein condensates
We predict and describe a new collective mode in rotating Bose–Einstein condensates, which is very similar to Rossby waves in geophysics. In the regime of fast rotation, the Coriolis force dominates the dynamics and acts as a restoring force for acoustic-drift waves along the condensate. We derive a nonlinear equation that includes the effects of both zero-point pressure and inhomogeneity of th...
متن کاملTkachenko waves in rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensates.
We present a mean-field theory numerical study of Tkachenko waves of a vortex lattice in trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condenstates. Our results show remarkable qualitative and quantitative agreement with recent experiments at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics. We extend our calculations beyond the conditions of the experiment, probing deeper into the incompressible regime where we...
متن کاملObservation of Tkachenko oscillations in rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensates.
We directly image Tkachenko waves in a vortex lattice in a dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensate. The low (sub-Hz) resonant frequencies are a consequence of the small but nonvanishing elastic shear modulus of the vortex-filled superfluid. The frequencies are measured for rotation rates as high as 98% of the centrifugal limit for the harmonically confined gas. Agreement with a hydrodynamic theory ...
متن کاملQuantum Hall States of Rapidly Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensates
This essay is a review of the topic of vortices in rapidly rotating BECs, where the system is in a quantum Hall-like regime and the density profile is of the Thomas-Fermi form. Also, in this paper, deviations from a triangular lattice is being considered while the system condensates into the lowest Landau levels.
متن کاملRotating Matter Waves in Bose-Einstein Condensates
In this paper we consider analytically and numerically the dynamics of waves in twodimensional, magnetically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates in the weak interaction limit. In particular, we consider the existence and stability of azimuthally modulated structures such as rings, multi-poles, soliton necklaces, and vortex necklaces. We show how such structures can be constructed from the linear ...
